The past couple of days have been really difficult for Tayden and us, but especially for our little angel.
Since the end of last week, he has been feeling under the weather with a bit of a sore tummy and constipation but nothing so bad that we thought anything TOO major of it.
On Sunday morning we were all dressed and ready to brave Sunday School, when he went down on all 4's and started gagging and gagging. It is very frightening for the little ones as they can't always catch their breath and don't know what is happening. I imagine it is quite painful as well, trying to vomit all the time then gagging as the fluid is going nowhere. They can't vomit but their stomach is doing its best to rid itself of the contents. For moms and dads l doubt there is a more helpless feeling in the world that watching these horrible gagging incidents which tube fed children are prone to.
Rob and I attached a tube to his tummy and syringed out more than 150ml of frothy yellow bile, after which he calmed down again for a couple of minutes and then the whole story started again. And so we treated it again.
This was followed by a huge pooh which we thought to mean he had gastro and he was quiet the rest of the day, taking it easy and just lieing resting, most unlike the Tayden we know and love.
Monday and Tuesday saw more gagging, with only a little eating and drinking on his part. In the end l called the paed who confirmed what l had thought - even though he was poohing everyday and received laxette in his feeds at night, our little guy had developed faecal loading, common in tube fed children.
A fleet enema was administered through the peg, along with a glycerine suppository and was due to work in 2-5 min, but after 13 hours still nothing was happening. I was told to administer another one through the tube. This saw some action, 13 pooh nappies and granny's white bathroom mat no longer looking so white...but at least we had some movement (pardon the pun!)...and it gives mom an excuse to shop - even if just for a mat!
However, even after his tummy settled from the enema, he continued to gag at an alarming rate, as soon as any food or liquid hit his stomach. I ended up racing from work yest to help granny drain his stomach again. There is something about taking a syringe and emptying your child's stomach which just makes me realise how wonderful technology is today - what would happen if we COULDN'T empty that tummy? Would he just gag and gag?
We s-l-o-w-l-y administered some rehydrate while he had his midday sleep and he even managed a little ginger ale on his own in the afternoon.
We fed him very carefully min amounts through his peg last night and although he is looking a bit brighter today and the gagging is less, it is by no means a done deal.
What caused it? Who knows. I just want it over with. It has been a very trying and draining past couple of days for us all.
On a bright note, we have found the most wonderful playgroup for Tayden! He will start in March and "visit" one morning a week before starting 3 mornings a week in April. Thank you to Leanne for looking after my special little angel.
God bless and thanks for reading xxxx
